The American Family Association of New Orleans is a local affiliate of the American Family Association. The AFA which was founded in 1979 by Dr. Donald Wildmon and is headquartered in Tupelo, MS, began in 1979 focusing primarily on the influence of television and other media, including pornography, on our society. Since then, the AFA has broadened it's scope to deal with other issues impacting our culture such as abortion, homosexuality, secularism, and gambling. AFANO was incorporated in 1997. The need for a local AFA affiliate was clearly demonstrated when a New Orleans radio station began broadcasting illegal, sexually oriented programming almost 24 hours a day. AFANO members launched an intense campaign of writing to the Federal Communications Commission and the advertisers and the station changed its format and dropped all of the offensive programming. Officially, the mission of AFANO is to promote, advocate, enhance and preserve the family in our society, and to do all those things necessary for the promulgation of the Biblical ethic of decency in America. AFANO also has a strong commitment to the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception to natural death. AFANO is non-denominational but, as evidenced by its mission statement, adheres to a Christian ethic and looks to the Bible as our authority in dealing with issues which impact our culture. |
